Science 7 M-Step Review #1
Levels of Organization and the Animal Kingdom

*Do Kings Play Chess on Fuzzy Green Stools?
Living organisms are often organized based on their physical structures.  Many people have learned that the organizational structure for living things is Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, species.

In the KPCOFGS organizational structure individual organisms that have the least in common are grouped together in the broadest level of organization, called the Kingdom, while individuals that have the most similarities and that can mate to produce viable offspring are called a species.

For example, an organisms is considered to be in the Animal Kingdom if it is...
  • eukaryotic (i.e. the cell contains a membrane-bound nucleus)
  • multicellular (unlike bacteria and most protists, an animal is composed of specialized cells performing specific functions)
  • heterotrophic (unlike plants and algae that are autotrophic, an animal depends on another organism for nutrients and energy)
  • lacking cell wall (unlike plants, algae and some fungi that possess cell walls)
  • motile, that is being able to move voluntarily
  • possessing specialized sensory organs for recognizing and responding to stimuli in the environment

Learning Task: M-Step Review Sheet #1
Read about the "Organization of the Animal Kingdom" on one side of the review sheet, then color the Names, Representative Members, and Number of Species on the "Major Phyla" side of the worksheet
